A TYPICAL DAY AT WEMBURY PRE-SCHOOL

The pre-school operates “in the moment” planning along- side themed planning.  The themes are based around the seasons with the children discovering their natural world around them during the year.  The children also learn all about themselves, their feelings and emotions, and all about family and community life.

The pre-school day starts with children arriving and self registering, they gather in our book corner where we share fact books around our current theme, we discuss our pre-school values reinforcing respecting each other.  The children then often join the primary school children for a run around the school field, allowing them to settle down quicker to learn.

Free play consists of indoor/outdoor through play which includes our mud kitchen, sand and water play and various planned activities based on our current theme. Planned activities include creative mark making, construction, role play and messy play.  The staff track the children’s interest with ‘in the moment’ planning which means spontaneous learning happens frequently throughout the day. If the children are particularly engaged in an activity staff will extend the learning time/goals following the children’s lead.  Physical activities are threaded throughout free play as our playground has large play structures and toys which allow the children to construct, balance, climb and role play.

Before lunch the children are separated into small focus learning groups for phonics and mathematics, these small groups offer the children individual learning and allow the staff to observe the children’s development.  Children learn phonics through rhyming, songs and phonic games (phonics are the Early Year’s first stages in learning to read and write). Mathematics is taught using the numbers 1 to 10, grouping numbers, matching, comparing quantities, number solving and adding and subtracting.  The children will sing or discover musical instruments during this period and be read a story based on what they are learning.

The children then have lunch, which consists of either a packed lunch from home or a hot school dinner from the primary school, followed by outdoor play.

The afternoon sessions mirror the morning sessions with different planned activities, however they are more spontaneous with visits to the story tree, school field, park and allotments.

Before the children go home they play circle games, dance, act out a story or use the parachute for team games.

The day ends with another story and a ‘goodbye’ song.

ADDITIONAL LANGUAGES

Your Child in our Pre-School

All our sessions are led in English , however most of our activities are visual, practical or musical and children whose language skills are still developing learn as much from these as from the spoken word.

Children are far better at learning a new language than adults and they will soon learn enough to understand and make themselves understood, especially when they are playing with other children.

We believe strongly that children benefit from learning about other cultures than their own. Your child may even be able to help us!
